Scenario

You are working across documents, emails, spreadsheets and websites when suddenly you lose track of your mouse pointer. You move the mouse around the screen, hoping to spot it, but it takes a few moments before you can continue what you were doing.

This can happen more often when using large monitors, multiple screens, busy applications, or sharing your screen during a meeting. Although each delay may only last a few seconds, repeatedly searching for the pointer can become frustrating and interrupt your concentration.

What is getting in the way?

The default mouse pointer can be small and difficult to see, especially on large or high-resolution screens. Colour schemes, busy backgrounds, visual impairments, fatigue and attention differences can all make it harder to quickly locate.

When finding the pointer requires extra effort, simple tasks can take longer and your focus can be interrupted.

Finding the pointer can be difficult because of:

  • visual impairment
  • large or multiple screens
  • busy applications and web pages
  • fatigue or eye strain
  • low contrast settings
  • working quickly between tasks

Tools that can help

Accessibility settings can make your mouse pointer easier to spot and follow. You can increase its size, change its colour, add a contrasting outline, or enable visual indicators that highlight its position.

Depending on your needs, these built-in tools can help:

  • Cursor and Pointer Customisation
  • Larger mouse pointers
  • Different pointer colours
  • Pointer Trails
  • Highlight Pointer: When enabled in your settings, pressing the Ctrl key causes Windows to briefly display an animated circle around the mouse pointer, making it much easier to spot on large, busy, or multi-monitor setups.

Making your pointer more visible can reduce frustration, help you navigate more confidently, and save time throughout the working day.

You do not need to try every tool. Start with one small change and see what helps.
