About mouse settings

Customising your mouse settings can make it easier and more comfortable to control your device. You can adjust how fast the pointer moves, how clicks work, and how easy it is to select items.

These small changes can reduce effort, improve accuracy, and help you work in a way that suits your movement and coordination.

Who this can help

Adjusting mouse settings can be useful for:

  • Mobility or physical impairments: reduces the effort needed to move and click
  • Reduced dexterity or coordination: improves control and accuracy
  • Tremors or involuntary movement: helps prevent accidental clicks or selections
  • Fatigue or pain: allows for smoother, lower-effort movement
  • Neurodivergent users: can make interaction feel more predictable and less frustrating

Tips for getting the best experience

  • Try slower pointer speeds if you find it hard to control the cursor
  • Increase double-click time if double-clicking feels difficult
  • Use a larger pointer for better visibility
  • Combine with other tools, like on-screen keyboards or voice input
  • Make small changes and test what feels most comfortable

How to change mouse settings in Windows

Adjust pointer speed

  • Open Settings
  • Go to Bluetooth and devices
  • Select Mouse
  • Adjust the Mouse pointer speed slider

Slower speeds can improve accuracy, while faster speeds reduce movement.

Change primary mouse button

  • In the same Mouse settings section
  • Choose Left or Right as your primary button

Useful if you use your mouse with your left hand.

Adjust scrolling

  • Change how many lines move when you scroll
  • Turn on scroll inactive windows to move content without clicking first

Access advanced settings

  • In Mouse settings, select Additional mouse settings
  • Explore options such as:
    • Double-click speed (how fast you need to click twice)
    • Pointer precision (how the cursor responds to movement)
    • Button configuration

These can help fine-tune how your mouse behaves.

Additional helpful settings
