What is JAWS?

JAWS (Job Access With Speech) is a paid screen reader for Windows, designed to support users who are blind or visually impaired. It converts on-screen text into Braille or speech, allowing users to navigate websites, applications, and documents without needing to see the screen.

JAWS offers advanced features such as scripting for custom application behaviour, support for refreshable Braille displays, and compatibility with most Windows applications including Microsoft Office, Edge, Teams and the Chrome browser.

How to Use JAWS

Starting JAWS

  • Launch JAWS from the Start menu or the JAWS desktop shortcut
  • Once active, it begins reading the screen immediately
  • To exit, press Insert + F4

Basic Navigation

  • Press Caps Lock + Down Arrow to read all content on the screen
  • Press Tab and Shift + Tab to move between interactive elements
  • Press Enter to activate buttons or links.

JAWS Key

JAWS uses a modifier key (usually Insert, Caps Lock, or NumPad 0) for commands. This can be customised in the settings.

Customisation

  • Adjust speech rate, verbosity, and voice settings via the JAWS menu
  • Use the Speech Viewer to see what JAWS is reading in text form on the screen
  • It can add Braille support if you are using a compatible display

Browser Compatibility

JAWS works with the Chrome, Edge and Firefox browsers.

Testing and Accessibility

  • JAWS is widely used for accessibility testing. It announces headings, links, buttons, and alt text.
  • It can be used to simulate how visually impaired users experience websites and applications.
